Term Abroad Questions
How many courses will I take per year?
You will need to take 10 courses a year in most cases which means you will have to take 4 courses in one term
Can I take 4 courses?
As an engineering major, you can take 4 courses in any one term in the calendar year at no extra cost to you. Because it is a 4th course, you will need to petition for it. In fact you can take 40 courses over 4 years so you may be able to take 4 courses in more than 1 term in a given academic year; however this can be a lot especially if some of the courses include a laboratory component.
What ECE/CS courses are WAC courses?
You need 5 WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum) courses to graduate. At a minimum, one of these courses must be outside your division (i.e., not a science or engineering course). Very frequently, students take EGL101 to fulfill this other division requirement although there are many other options).
Within the EE and CpE programs, the following courses are WAC
ECE240
ECE241
ECE318
ECE343
CSC250
CS80
MTH199
Should I take MTH197 or MTH199?
MTH197 is a less theoretical course appropriate for
CpE majors who are taking Math mainly because they need
to as opposed to because they love it. MTH199 is a
more theoretical and challenging course appropriate for students who might
want to minor in Math (it is a required course for a Math minor)
and generally enjoy it and excel at it.
One advantage of MTH199 is that it is a WAC course.
Which CS: Introduction to Programming Course should I take?
If you are a CpE major, you can take any one of the courses CSc 103-107.
If you are an EE major, you can take CSc 103-107 or CSc109.
For your graudation requirements you can take any of these courses. You should read the
description of the courses in the catalog and if one of them really interests you
(e.g., playing with robots) then take that course.
If you are an EE and know already that programming
is something that will
not be enjoyable to you and you want to take only one programming course at Union,
CSc109 teaches you Matlab and this is the programming
language that is used in many
of the ECE core courses and it may help you to have taken this intro course.
For the Prague Term Abroad, how many ECE technical electives can be transferred?
None.
Starting in the fall of 2012, the ECE policy for Prague is that: “Students may count one course as an
“engineering elective” (required for EE majors only).” Other courses will continue to count as free electives.
Since CpE students do not have an “engineering elective” requirement, all courses in Prague will
count as free electives.
How do I know if a course will count as an ECE technical elective (300 level)?
You need to send a catalog description to the chair (along with the number of credits)
and get the chair's approval for the course. Ideally, you should do this prior to going on the term
abroad or certainly before you take the course.
Can I take my mechanical engineering course requirement abroad?
Yes, but this should also be approved by the department chair to make sure that you will
get the appropriate credit.
Can a core course be taken while on term abroad?
Generally, term abroad courses don't match up well with our required ECE
courses and so transfer as electives or a technical elective. There have
been occasional exceptions to this, but they require detailed
information on the course contents and assessment.
How many courses can I transfer from term abroad?
Four is normally the maximum (check with the Term Abroad coordinator)
If I take more than 1 technical elective, will the others transfer as general electives?
Yes, they will transfer as general electives; you can use these to meet other gen-ed requirements also.
The Dean of Students must approve the gen-ed courses.
Is it possible to go on term abroad in my final year?
Yes. You just take the 4th year fall courses in your
3rd year fall term, except for 498. You do your capstone project
winter/spring instead of fall/winter in your senior year. The only disadvantage is that
you will not be eligible
for the best senior project award.
