2015 WINTER SEMINAR SERIES

Communication and Education in the Anthropocene

The Environmental Science, Policy & Engineering program at Union College kicks off the Winter seminar series Wednesday, 14 January 2015. This is the 18th year that this series has been run by the ESP&E program. Since its inception, this seminar series has tackled some of the key environmental issues that we face as a society. The first winter seminar was in 1998 on the topic of "Global climate change."

Wednesday, January 14 - Dr. Scott Mandia
Professor of Physical Sciences at Suffolk Community College
Dr. Mandia is the Co-founder of the Climate Science Rapid Response Team (climaterapidresponse.org) and the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (climatesciencedefensefund.org). These organizations, and Dr. Mandia’s Twitter handle (@AGW_Prof) serve as counters to the organized climate-denial industry.

Wednesday, January 21 - Dr. Holly Menninger
Director of Public Science for College of Science at North Carolina State University
Dr. Menninger’s website (http://hollymenninger.com/) describes her as “an entomologist by training, a science communicator by passion and practice”. She is a leader in science communication in such forums as blogging, Twitter (@DrHolly), and Citizen Science.

Wednesday, January 28 - Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz
Director, Yale Project on Climate Change Communication
Dr. Leiserowitz and the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication have led some of the most careful studies of public opinion related to climate change science and policy. Their reports on the “Global Warming’s Six Americas” have fascinating implications for effective environmental communication. http://environment.yale.edu/profile/leiserowitz/
