Research Experience
Western Mexico (2000-2005)
Collected samples of volcanic rocks to determine eruptive rates. Conducted 40Ar/39Ar analyses on groundmass and mineral separates. Developed techniques to quantify volume of volcanic products using field mapping, orthophotos, digital elevation models, and ArcGIS software. Analyzed minerals with the electron microprobe to determine elemental concentrations and zoning.
Vinalhaven, Maine (1998-1999)
Detailed field mapping and sample collection of plutonic rocks to describe the interaction of mafic and felsic magmas. Conducted whole-rock XRF analyses for major and trace elements. Keck Consortium project advised by Bob Wiebe, Bud Wobus, and Dave Hawkins
Ledger Formation, PA (1998-1999)
Analyzed various calcite cements petograhically and with cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Micro-drilled cements for ICP-AA and stable isotope (C and O) analysis.
Venusian lava flows (1997)
Digitized lava flow margins on radar images from the Magellan orbiter. Correlated fractal dimension of digitized margins with available geochemical data to infer viscosity. Keck Consortium project advised by Eric Grofils, Linda Reinen, Sam Kozak, and Marty Gilmore.
