This course is a survey of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the world's oceans. It examines the present ocean basins including important sea floor features, plate tectonic concepts, ocean currents and the forces that drive these imporant processes.
The course also looks at oceanic sedimentation and the climate records they hold, the role of the oceans in climate change including the Ice Ages, coastal processes and sea level change, biological productivity, and the ocean fishing and minerals industries.
Who should take this course? This course is an introductory course for the major in the Geosciences. It is an excellent introduction to ocean science life for ENS and Biology majors. No prerequisites.
This course satisfies GEN ED (SCIE) and, like all Introductory courses in the Geosciences, it has no prerequisites.
