We have a tabletop Phillips PW-1840 X-ray diffraction machine. This is a computer controlled instrument with computer data acquisition via MDI Datascan software. The goniometer has an automatic divergence slit, a solid state detector, and a scan range of ~0 to 120°2θ. It is currently equipped with a cobalt tube using an iron filter. Samples can be prepared as smears on short glass slides (about 5 mm shorter than a typical petrographic microscope slide) or pressed into a shallow well in aluminum holders. We also have MDI Jade+ version 6.0 software for XRD data processing, including peak search and match capabilities using the installed ICDD PDF-2 (1996) powder diffraction file database.
