Archiving WWW Sites |
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Phase 1 (May 2002):
Identification of the major issues in web archiving.
a. Conduct a 2-day workshop of library, administrative, and
information technology staff from selected Northeast liberal arts
colleges, hosted by Union College, facilitated by a recognized expert
in issues of web archiving;
b. Identify the various reasons for wanting to archive web-based
materials;
c. Identify archival storage and retrieval mechanisms:
- archival media;
- archival file types;
- file type descriptions;
- method of transfer and backup;
- retrieval and read software and hardware;
- duplicating software and hardware.
d. Identify the nature and content of WWW site documents and other
files that should be considered for archiving;
e. Identify types of linked subsections to be routinely archived,
and the degree of functionality (i.e. hyperlinks) desired or needed in
the archive;
f. Investigate longevity and stability of available storage
media;
g. Investigate longevity and stability of available read/write
mechanisms.
h. Address copyright and intellectual property issues.
Phase 2 (2002-2003 academic year; pending funding):
Testing and comparing alternative approaches.
a. Form a collaborative arrangement for trial archiving and
retrieval projects of institutional WWW site(s) and subsections,
participants to be drawn from the May 2002 workshop;
b. From the 2-day workshop, identify a manageable number of
problems to be solved, and a manageable number of possible
solutions;
c. In a Phase 2 work-plan, allocate these problems and solutions
across the collaborating schools to pilot the various solutions for
WWW archiving. We will plan for sufficient overlap that each solution
is tested by more than one school, and we will collect information
about the (present and expected future) costs and benefits of each
solution.
d. Explore if and how our findings relate to solution(s) of the
more general problem of archiving institutional digital records of all
kinds;
e. Develop a report of recommended practices and strategies, with
the pros and cons of alternative practices, applicable to web
archiving, and similar institutional records management programs.
