Archiving WWW Sites

OVERVIEW & REGISTRATION

A college’s WWW site is probably its largest and most expensive publication.  As such, the site (together with all of the linked subsections) will contain an enormous amount and variety of institutional, administrative, and academic information about the college at a moment in time.  Yet few colleges have any systematic plan to record and preserve this picture for the historical record.  In fact, we really don’t even know how to do this.  If the WWW site were an ordinary print publication this important, we would all be seriously remiss in giving as little thought to the archiving problem as we ordinarily do.

We have been thinking about how to do this here at Union College, and concluded that we should bring together interested librarians and information technology folks from the region to talk about it.  We have invited David Bearman, President of Archives and Museum Informatics, to facilitate a 2-day workshop here at Union on May 13-14 on this question, and related issues concerning the archiving of digital institutional records.

We will pay transportation and lodging expenses for up to two individuals from each institution, including some meals.   I expect that we shall all learn a good deal from the session, from Mr. Bearman as well as from each other.

Space is limited; to register, please e-mail your interest to me at: mcfaddet@union.edu
