Physics 120 Winter 2022 Notes

 

Week #1

Sign up for Expert TA and Complete the Diagnostic Pre-test

There will be no lab in week #1.  We will do two labs in week #2.

There will be no quiz in week #1 due to being virtual.

Week #2

Lab will be held on Monday and Thursday this week.

Please read Lab#1 Kinematics Graphs for Monday.

Please read Lab #2 Projectile Motion for Thursday.

Quiz #1 will be on Friday, January 14, 2022 and will cover motion in 1-dimension with constant acceleration.

Week #3

Please read Lab #3 Air Resistance for Thursday.

Quiz #2 will be on Friday, January 21, 2022 and will cover vectors and motion in 2-dimension with constant acceleration.

Wednesday office hours will be from 10:30 - 11:30 this week.

Office hours on Thursday's from 2 - 3 are cancelled for the rest of the term.

There will be lab on Thursday. Please read Flying Pigs before coming to class.

Quiz #3 will be on Friday, 2/4/22 and will cover forces and uniform circular motion.

Week #6

Quiz #4 will be on Friday, 2/11/22 and will cover work, work-kinetic energy theorem, & gravitational potential energy

Lab #5 will be this week. Please read Springs and Karate Boards before Thursday.

Week #7

Quiz #6 will be on Friday, 2/18/22 and will cover potential energy and conservation of energy.

There will be lab this week. Please read lab #6, the ballistic pendulum, before class.

Week #8

There will be no lab this week.

Exam #2 will be on Friday, 2/25/22, and will cover Ch. 3 (vector addition, dot product), Ch. 4 (uniform circular motion and centripetal acceleration), Ch. 6 (uniform circular motion and centripetal force), Ch. 7 (work-kinetic energy theorem, work done by springs and gravity), Ch. 8 (gravitational potential energy, spring potential energy, conservation of energy), & Ch. 9 (collisions and conservation of momentum)

Week #9

Quiz #6 will be on Friday, 3/4/22, and will cover rotational motion.

Lab #7 will be on Thursday, 3/3/22. Please read rotational dynamics before class.

Week #10

There is no lab this week.

There will be no quiz on Friday, 3/11/22.

 

Final Exam Information

Winter 2022 Final Exam Information:

Date and time: Monday, March 14, 2022 from 11:30am - 1:30pm, ISEC 120. 

There will be 4 problems on the exam each worth 35 points. Each problem consists of five worked parts with each worked part worth 7 points yielding 35 points for each problem.

The final exam is worth 140 points total.

Topics on the final:

1. Forces, conservation of energy, collisions, conservation of momentum, circular motion, equations of motion for constant acceleration, & vectors.

2. Forces, conservation of energy, work & energy, vectors, conservation of energy, circular motion.

3. Rotational dynamics, equations of motion for constant accleration (both angular and translational), assumptions in problems, measurements and uncertanties in measurements.

4. Rotational statics, forces, torques, equations of motion (for both angular and translational).
