War-era associations of socialism with police states, and red scares
about the menace of communism at home. Today, however, talk of "socialism" is more often greeted with a shrug than anything else. What does socialism mean in the twenty-first century, what prospects does it hold for average workers, and what chance is there of rekindling the flame of American radicalism for a new generation?
