Policy on Summer Internships and Jobs

Professor Motahar’s Courses

Spring 2024

Union College is on a trimester system, and our Spring Term ends very late in comparison to the vast majority of colleges and universities in the U.S.  Because of this, on occasion, some students find themselves in a difficult situation:  what to do if their summer internship, or job, starts before our Spring Term ends?  The College does not have a policy on this issue.  However, in the interests of transparency and fairness, I have instituted the following policy for my courses.

If, because of a summer internship, or job, you must miss the last week, or the last two weeks, of the term, this will not be held against you.  However, you are entirely responsible for the lectures/material that you miss.  I will not be able to spend extra time with you for those missed lectures.  Some courses (such as my Eco 352, SCH, and FYI) require presentations.  You must make sure to make your presentation before you leave for your internship.  Regarding the final exam, you must make every effort to attend the exam as scheduled by the Registrar.  However, if you absolutely cannot do this, I will make a special accommodation for you so that you can take the final exam, on campus, on Sunday, June 9, 2:00-4:00 PM [the only other alternative is Friday June 7, 2:00-4:00 PM].  If you decide to take this option, you must:  (a) show documentation regarding the internship or job, and (b) sign a confidentiality agreement.  Regarding those courses that have a term paper, the due date for the term paper will be enforced irrespective of your internship/job status.
