Economics 498 and 499
Oral Examination

As the Syllabus states: "An oral
examinations will be held some time during the ninth week of the first term
of work (November 1st through
November 7th). This examination will play a part in determining
your grade for that term. Your grade on this examination will become part of
your thesis advisor's record and will influence your final course grade in
the thesis."
For
this exam you should adhere to the following instructions.
Please submit the following
material, via e-mail, to your examiner at least 48 hours before
your oral exam time (with a cc to me).
1.
A brief description of your thesis which conforms to the following guidelines:
a.
It should be about 750 words long.
b.
It should include a
working title for your thesis
c.
It should address the
following questions:

What is your thesis question/hypothesis?
-
What is
the economic importance/relevance of the thesis question/hypothesis?
-
What is the connection (subject/methodology) between your thesis and the
existing literature (please discuss at least two items—books, journal
articles, etc.—of closely related work, including models/data used,
conclusions reached, etc.)?

What is the model/analytical
framework that you are going to use to investigate your thesis
question/hypothesis?
-
What is
your expected contribution?
2. A detailed outline of
the thesis indicating major points and sub-topics to be considered in
the thesis.
3.
An annotated bibliography:
that is, a list of sources that you have consulted, including, with each
source, a short summary (one to two sentences).
Please
make sure to identify yourself and your thesis advisor on the cover page.
Please make sure to check with your examiner, as soon as
I let you know who she/he is, to set up a mutually agreeable time and date
for your oral exam.
