Scanning Electron Microscope Images

Photography 2 AVA- 220
Winter Term 2009

Photography students will visit engineering to participate in a workshop of creating aesthetic images utilizing the S.E.M

Some students will explore microscopic views and make images of subject matter that was photographed by them traditionally [with film and hand processed with B&W photo chemistry and hand printed on traditional B&W photo paper].

The new images made with S.E.M. will be explored digitally with PhotoShop editing software, altered in PhotoShop and printed as aesthetic images. While working with the S.E.M., students will learn about the scientific and engineering aspects what they are seeing, as well as have a hands-on experience in using the S.E.M. setup and controls. The photography students are largely concerned with the aesthetics of the images they are making, while also gaining insight and knowledge about the science and engineering content of the experience. These images will be part of their final portfolios for Photo 2 that also included their photographs made by traditional photography methods.

ESC224/CHM224 students will make images to document their exploration with the S.E.M. as part of their course work.

These explorations will be about more scientific concerns and will relate to the course they are working in. Students learn the operation and science behind how the S.E.M. works and what it renders as digital scanned images. Through discussion with Prof. Catravas, the science/engineering students will learn to also relate and respond to the images they are making from an aesthetic point of view, as well as the scientific concerns they are exploring. The science/engineering students concern themselves more with elements imaged and what scientifically is revealed in the images, but also are directed to appreciate the aesthetics of the resulting images.
