The following was taken from an online question and answer correspondence with the artist of "Time & Youth": Knut Hybinette. All questions were asked by current Photo II students at Union College.

Question: Any technical info you would like to share would be helpful. Camera/format/film/type of prints/use of digital, etc. Any alteration or manipulation?

Knut: Most of the photos where taken by a 4x5 Field Camera and a few where taken by medium format. I used 160NC Kodak film. None of the photos were digitally altered. I use 3,500 watts strobes lights with slaves attached to them. The type paper I use is Kodak Supre III N Surface.

Question: What is your relationship to your subjects? Who are they? How do you select them?

Knut: My subjects are strangers and also some close friends of my parents. I find some of my subjects from retirement homes. I offer a candy bar to some of my subjects. Some people I just run into and ask to photograph them.

Question: Are all shots posed and directed by you?

Knut: Most of my shots with the 4x5 Field Camera are posed. I do direct them to get an image I like. I use a Polaroid to determine what kind of scenery I want. I also listen to my subjects. They have had some 60 years of experience looking at themself and I trust them because they know how they look the best. A few where not set up

Question: Where are the photographs taken? The subjects own home/surrounding or on a location of your choosing?

Knut: Most of the photos where taken in Enkoping, Sweden. Its small community in Sweden where every one knows every one. I'm known as the crazy American. Most of the photos were taken at places where subjects live close by.

Question: Concerning the “corpse” photo. Could you please explain if this was a real or staged shot? The red nails?

Knut: To make this image I snuck into a retirement home at night. For some reason, I had a bottle of ketchup with me. I'm not sure why but I guess I forgot I had the Ketchup since I carry a lot camera gear. When I came into the room that I thought was a morgue it turned out to be another residence's room. When I heard Adolf (according to the chart) snoring I just had to take a photo of him. I used ketchup to paint his toes. I only took one shot because he almost woke up due to the brightness of the flash. I did take photos of the Morgue the next day but I didn't like them because they looked too pale.

Question: How do the subject’s respond to the photographs of themselves?

Knut: My subjects love the photos. Even Adolf called me.

Question: What is your next project?

Knut: I'm working on three projects. First: I was commissioned by Tanquery (Gin) where I'm taking life size photo grams of people who are in the Adult Industry and projecting there childhood photos into the white areas. Second project: I'm picking people up in porn stores and following them home and photographing them. Third project: I'm tracking down Glam Rock Bands and photographing them as eighties rock posters. All of them are murals prints. I'm also working on a short comical video where I make fun of sterotypes. I also working on an animation of Soccer where humans are playing against hell. It should be done end of March.

Question: Do you have a web site of your own work?

Knut: I have one coming up in this summer. It will be www.knuthybinette.com

Question: Who are some of you favorite photographers and influences?

Knut: It is a lot easier to say who I don't like. A A. Some of photographers I like are Joel Peter Witkin, Arthur Tress, Philp di Dicorica, Yanagi Miwa, Robert Parke Harrison, Francesca Woodman,Masao Yamamoto, Nadar, Micikon Kon,August Sanders, Reinke, Lacheplle, and many more. Some non photographers are Ropes, Poe, Munch, Courbet, Hieronymus Bosch, David, Calder and many more. I get my ideas by driving at night and listening to music.

Question: How long did this project take or is it on going?

Knut: This project took me month to shoot.

The Union College Art Departement would like to thank Knut for his time and for sharing his wonderful photographs! Good Luck Knut!
