Phone numbers:  From overseas, all numbers can be reached by dialing 64, then a single digit area code, then the number.  In New Zealand, you must use a two-digit area code (add the leading zero).  You cannot call toll-free numbers from overseas, only within NZ.

Baggage storage at Auckland International Airport.  You will be allowed a pack/duffel and a single Day pack ONLY.  Store the rest of your belongings at the Auckland International Airport.  You can do this are either the “Visitor Information Centre” (64, 9, 275-6467) for 7$NZ per bag per day, open 5 AM to Midnight.  OR at “Seal and Secure” (also in International terminal), for $5NZ per bag ($4 for 2 wk), but hours are 5AM to 8 PM - check the time of your return.

Suggested lodging in Auckland: Please try to stay on or very near Queen Street. Queen Street is centrally located and a common focal point in the city.  Suggestions:

1) Auckland Central Backpackers (ACB), 9 Fort street, ph: 09-358-4877.  www.abc.co.nz. Shared rooms as low as $NZ20 pp/pn.  Note that these guys run a travel outfit, so you can book a bus/excursion to Paihia in the Bay of Islands for a day or two.

2) Auckland Queen Street Backpackers, 4 Fort St.  ph: 09-373-3471.  Shared rooms as low as $NZ20 pp/pn.

3) Kiwi International Hotel, 411 Queen street, 09-379-6487 (rooms $39-99NZ, 1-2 people) www.kiwihotel.co.nz  (at the top of Queen street, a little farther from the action).

4) Hotel DeBrett, 2-4 High St., 09-377-2389 ($NZ65-85 double/twin) www.abc.co.nz/debrett  Much more expensive option, but in the same area.  A much more expensive option is the Mercure Hotel (was Novotel) on 8 Customs St, 09,307-8920.



Details of Daily activity

30 Nov. Group should plan to spend the night at a central hotel in Auckland for early morning departure. Students MUST arrive in Auckland on this day or before.  See suggestions above.  If you arrive several days before this, I suggest traveling north to the Bay of Islands.  A number of simple bus trips can get you to Paihia, which is well situated for backpackers.  Note that Auckland itself has quite a bit to offer.


1 Dec. Assemble in Auckland AM.  You should plan on staying at a youth hostel on Queen Street (see above). Topic: Auckland, Auckland city volcanoes. Ferry to Rangitoto and climb up 600 yr old basaltic cinder volcano.  If you miss the departure, please call us on the NZ mobile number.  You will need to catch a bus to Rotorua from Auckland.  Once in Rotorua, take a taxi to Holden’s Bay Holiday Park (it is east of the city).

1)  Meet at Mercure  Hotel (8 Customs ST.) with all bags at 08:00 AM, downtown in Auckland (lower Queen Street).  Assemble at c. 8 AM
2)  Load vans and then take Fullers Ferry (Queen St. Quay, Fullers: 09-367-9111) to Rangitoto Is. (http://www.fullers.co.nz/): depart at 9:00 AM arrive 9:30  Hike to summit and back (2 hr), return ferry at 11:30 AM, arrive back at the Fullers Ferry dock (end of Queen Street) at 12:00.

 3)  Drive Auckland-Rotorua (4 hr). Arrive Rotorua at c. 5:00 PM.

3 Dec. Rotorua. Whakarewarewa Maori Cultural center, displacement of Maori villagers by 1888 eruption. Pohutu geyser. Managing geothermal resources in Rotorua. 1) Hike the Tongiriro Crossing (Full Day hike)

Mangatapopo Hut. Ngauruhoe volcano, eruptive deposits and nué ardente flows of 1978, Red Crater fumerole activity.  Shuttle drop off and pickup at trail heads: 07:00 AM departure.

7 Dec. National Park to Wellington.  Wellington fault, California Park. Wellington fault trace through Wellington and the seismic hazards of Wellington. Tour with IGNS geologists, seismic safety.

1) Depart 07:00, Drive to Wellington (c. 4 hr)
2) California Park - The Wellington fault in an urban landscape. Tour along fault and ends in Wellington. Modern seismic protection: Te Papa museum.
3) 4:00 to 6:00 Awesome Forces: Te Papa (downtown Wellington).

4) Dinner in Wellington. Depart Wellington at 8:30 PM

5) Evening: vans must be completely emptied and cleaned.

8 Dec. Wellington - Picton. Drive to Westport (Cape Foulwind). (Note: M. Pole's IMPORTANT birthday)

1)  Interislander Ferry - Wellington - Picton.  We must arrive at the ferry terminal no later that 8:45 AM for the early departure.  You will need to have all your stuff packed in the morning because we will change vans.  You will be able to check your bag, but carry on your day pack.  Sailing: 09:30-12:30. 3)  1:30 PM leave Picton, drive to Westport (5 hr)
