Geo 106 Introduction to Oceanography

A survey of physical, chemical, and biological oceanography. Involves an examination of the present ocean basins including important sea floor features, plate tectonic concepts, ocean currents and the forces driving them, oceanic sedimentation and the climate records they hold, the role of the oceans in climate change including the Ice Ages, coastal processes and sea level change, biological productivity, and the ocean fishing and minerals industries. The course may include a day trip to the beach.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The lighthouse on Fire Island allows excellent views of a barrier island. We also explore the beach and measure beach profiles use laser range finders.
