Review of last meeting's minutes

With only four members present, and only a short time to meet, the time was devoted to a discussion of the charge to the AAC subcommittee on distance learning.  Our and the AAC's objective should be to see that technology and the tools of distance learning are used to promote the College's mission.

In helping to define terms and frame the debate, we note that Tom McFadden has summarized many of the issues regarding distance education in a series of three discussion papers over the past year:

We will arrange to have one or more members of AAC meet with us to discuss the proposed charge.  We want to be sure that the work of the subcouncil will be useful, focused, and not repeat work the Steering Committee has already done.

Specifically, we would like to work with the AAC to clarify:

  • What exactly is meant when we speak of distance education, distributed learning, online learning, WWW courses, hybrid online/offline courses, transfer online courses, transfer distance education courses.

  • What outcomes does AAC want from the Subcouncil, and in what time frame?

  • If faculty recognition and reward is an issue, should the FRB also be involved?

Next meeting: To be determined
