Computing Steering Committee
(AcCSC) Minutes of Meetings: Present: Bauman, Cossey, Keller, Klein, McFadden, Smith Review of last meeting's minutes 1. Sensemaking. The group briefly discussed a branch of Pervasive Computing known as Sensemaking. This refers to meta-search algorithms that takes data-mining to a new level of sophistication, seeking meaningful connections across widely dispirit databases. This sort of searching is potentially useful in the war on terror, but also raises disturbing privacy issues. An artricle on sensemaking appeared in a recent issue of the MIT Technology Review. On the subject of Pervasive Computing, click here for a list of some online resources. 2. Web archiving. Tom Smith discussed several methods of BTN archiving (better-than-nothing). One includes using the Internet Explorer "Save as website" option. The question of how many layers to save, and whether to extend the save beyond the home directory or domain was discussed. The process is not very automated, however. Tom McFadden has produced some documents which will be posted at the archiving web site. We discussed whether non-official sites -- departments, clubs, student life -- should be archived. If so, issues of (a) finding them (b) knowing when they have changed and (c) securing permissions arise. 3. GIS. Diane Keller has been looking into GIS and Census data for our projects on GIS in the classroom. We are hoping that the GIS class taught through Geology will cover more of the practical how-tos of finding and importing data into ArcView.
