Previous meeting minutes.

1. The meeting was devoted to a discussion of preparing a memo outlining the approach we feel Union should take toward enhancing the technical literacy of its students.  The recommendation will be addressed to the Gen Ed board and the AAC.

We agreed that it was important to begin by defining (loosely) and stressing the growing importance of technical literacy as a mark of an educated person, with examples to reinforce what we mean.  Next, we want to lay out some alternative means of achieving technical literacy among our students, including a required competency exam, a required course, or (our preferred solution) working to incorporate the development of technical literacy into General Education courses.  To this end, we will encourage the Gen Ed Board (perhaps with the help of the Assessment Board) to survey existing Gen Ed courses to see what level of technical literacy they now produce, and then have the Gen Ed board begin to work to encourage a greater level of technical sophistication among students.

Doug Klein will write a draft memo based on these ideas and circulate it to the group.

This was the last real meeting for the Committee, but we will circulate and edit the memo virtually.  Once the memo is sent, the Committee goes out of existence unless re-appointed by the VP for Academic Affairs.
