Interdisciplinary (Liberal Arts and Engineering)
Course Development Funds
from Union's NSF-AIRE Grant

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

Union's NSF-AIRE (Award for the Integration of Research and Education) Award contains $50,000 to be used for the development of 10 team-taught courses in technology for liberal arts majors. In the first round of funding, we approved the three courses below for funding:

We now invite faculty to apply in a second round of funding using the following guidelines:

  1. Normally, these courses will be team-taught by two faculty members, one from liberal arts and one from engineering.
  2. A sum of $5000 per course is available for course development and faculty stipends.
  3. If the course is taught by two faculty members both will receive a full course teaching credit for the first two times that the course is offered. If more than two faculty collaborate, the total teaching credit per course offering is two.
  4. Preference will be given to courses in which faculty roles and expertise are integrated. The ideal course will involve extensive interaction of the instructors in the classroom, rather than having designated portions of the course taught by one instructor with no involvement of the other(s).

The assumption is that these courses would be listed as GenEd courses. In some cases, they might satisfy the culture component of GenEd, while others may satisfy the science component. In the future, depending on the collective wisdom of the faculty, they could be used to satisfy an additional technology component to GenEd.

Deadline: Proposals for NSF-AIRE support are due in the Dean of Faculty's office by April 1, 2000. These proposals should be 2-4 pages in length (double-spaced) and should focus on how the instructors will ensure disciplinary integration in their proposed course. No budget page is required. Please contact Dean Christie Sorum, Dean Robert Balmer or Professor Tom Werner if questions arise.
