Bhaskar Sunkara

Bringing Radicalism into the Mainstream
Wednesday, November 11, 2015, 7:00-8:45 PM, Olin 115
The discussion dinner preceding the talk, at 5:30 PM, will be at the Beuth Minerva House.

We have come along way from the Cold War-era associations of socialism with police states, and red scares about the menace of communism at home.

Today, however, talk of "socialism" is more often greeted with a shrug than anything else.  What does socialism mean in the twenty-first century, what prospects does it hold for average workers, and what chance is there of rekindling the flame of American radicalism for a new generation?

Bhaskar Sunkara is the founding editor and publisher of Jacobin magazine, a socialist publication that reaches 750,000 people monthly online and a print subscriber base of over 15,000.

Socialism, Sunkara argues, can be reimagined and capture the imaginations of millions, as long as radicals can break free of their isolation on the margins of American society and build movements that capture the pent up frustrations and aspirations of the ordinary people.
