International Studies at Union 2005 Feigenbaum Forum home page
Welcome and Introduction
Interim
President In a profile a few years back in Business Week, a writer summed up their Feigenbaums’ approach to quality control and management: “Never Mind the Buzzwords. Roll Up Your Sleeves.” We’re here today to eschew some of the buzzwords at least and roll up our sleeves to talk about a true hallmark of the Union experience: international studies. It is a pleasure to welcome all of you to Feigenbaum Hall, a wonderful building whose renovation and maintenance is made possible by the generosity of our distinguished guests. But it is an even greater pleasure to welcome back Armand and Donald Feigenbaum for our 10th annual Feigenbaum Forum. Donald and Armand have returned to their alma mater each fall for a decade now to lead us in discussions of issues and programs that are unique to Union. They have helped us to focus on ways that Union can maintain a distinct advantage among higher education institutions across the country. Over the years, the brothers have led us in discussions ranging from leadership to improving efficiency to implementing innovations such as Converging Technologies and the Minervas. But what has always remained a constant over the last nine Feigenbaum Forums is attention to quality. As Union continues to transform itself, we have done well to follow the Feigenbaums’ great advice that we focus on the things that we can do better than our competitors. The Feigenbaums, pioneers in the field of quality management, are no strangers to awards. But since our last Feigenbaum Forum, there is one more to report: the Feigenbaum Leadership Excellence Award was established last spring by e-TQM College, an electronic educational institution based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The award honors exemplary leaders in the Arab world. Perhaps most significantly, it recognizes leadership by women in the region. This is a yet another fine example of the global influence that these two alumni have had. We are truly fortunate to have had them as close friends of the College these many years, and I thank them for their continued support and leadership. I would like to present Donald Feigenbaum, who will provide opening remarks.
