FRN-130: Modern France / La France actuelle
Course Description:French 130 is a course that seeks to examine modern France through authentic material - texts, films, radio, and television broadcasts. Studies of political institutions, social, economic, and cultural life as well the role and place of France in the European Union and in the Francophone World will be conducted. Will be entirely taught in French. Pre-requisite: French 121 or permission of instructor
Course Expectations and Requirements:In this course we’ll analyze texts and audiovisual material in relation to the historical, political, economical and socio-cultural contexts of their production. Student are expected to consider the ways the authors present their stories by looking at the meanings and the style or narrative techniques the authors use to express those meanings. Assignments will include a series of questions/answers formats, 2 to 3 short papers (compositions) and a long paper (about 5 pages) or a final project at the end of the term. All assignments are expected to be presented in a clear and coherent way reflecting the student’s critical judgment and ability to express his/her ideas in a sustained French. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON THE DAY I WILL TELL YOU. Each unexcused absence after your 3 freebees will lower your participation and attendance based grade. Example: a B in participation becomes a B- after the 4th unexcused absence, C+ after the 5th, etc. Students are expected to attend cultural activities sponsored by the French club and the French Table three times. Students are also urged to meet with our French Assistant. The Assistant is responsible for providing help as far as your needs in terms of writing are concerned. You can also get help from the Writing Center via a trained student tutor who will listen to your concerns and work with you wherever you are in the writing process. Dictionnaire Français/Anglais
