(AcCSC) Minutes of Meetings: Present: none/all. This was a virtual meeting.
Review of last meeting's minutes 1. Web advising. Unfortunately, the first full full-scale test of the web advising system revealed some substantial problems. The system was barely, or not accessible from Friday, Feb. 22 through Tuesday, Feb. 26. By lunchtime on the 26th each department should have received the traditional paper copies of degree audits. As of the morning of the 27th, system was up and running on a backup machine, at the same address http://webadvising.union.edu. If you are asked about a "certificate" when you log on, click "Yes". In the future, until we have had several successful experiences with the system, we will distribute paper degree audits in advance of preregistration. In the meantime, if you have suggestions on how to make the system more useful (other than the obvious one of keeping it running!) please let me know. For For example, for Spring term, we plan to add additional fields, such as graduation year, major, and advisor to the data shown. (See the list of upgrades in previous meeting notes; these upgrades were lost in restoring the system, but will be added again.) 2. Summer orientation. The summer orientation data meeting took place on Thursday, Feb. 28, and produced the a document listing information transactions we could identify. Click here for the document "Information Exchange with Incoming Freshmen" (Word document) 3. The new look of libraries. Tom M. provides this link on the new library: Sunday, February 10, 2002 (SF Chronicle): A new chapter for libraries/Preference for online research has its price, by Tanya Schevitz, Chronicle Staff Writer. 4. Technology and Tenure. C. Batson provides this article from the Chronicle of Higher Ed, on how promotion and tenure committees look at faculty using technology. From the issue dated February 22, 2002, "Ever So Slowly, Colleges Start to Count Work With Technology in Tenure Decisions; The key may be a growing movement for peer review of Web sites and online teaching materials." By JEFFREY R. YOUNG 5. Web archiving. Doug K. recently met the founders and directors of AMICO: Art Museum Image Consortium. In addition to being a leader in providing digital art images, David Bearman and Jennifer Trant were quite knowledgeable on issues of web archiving. They suggested that Swedish libraries were in the forefront of examining these issues. Here is a link to a paper on web archiving, from the Royal Library of Sweden: Problems and opportunities of Web Archiving, Johan Mannerheim, Head, Division of IT, Royal Library of Sweden 6. e-Portfolios. As a reminder, we are still planning to participate in Connecticut College's electronic portfolio development project. E-portfolios are getting a lot of press these days. Here are some links:
7. IBM day. Friday, March 8 will be IBM day on campus. All are urged to attend the product demos around campus, and the roundtable on Converging Technologies at 10:00 in the Nott. As part of the event, the new Union CT website will be unveiled. It is still in development (so don't publicize it), but if you have any comments or suggestions, let Peter Blankman in the Communications Office know. the meeting did not adjourn next meeting: March 6, 2002, 1:30,
