Minutes of Meetings:
October 1, 2003

Present: Bauman, Davis, Klein, Keller, Sener, Traver

Review of last meeting's minutes

Our first meeting of the term.   We missed our chance to see Charles; he is off in France again, and Felmon Davis will fill in for the Fall term.

1. Virus attacks.  All Windows computers on-campus and off-campus need to have the lastest security patch installed if running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT,  Windows server 2000  or Windows server 2003.  If you are not sure, call ITS at x6293, or USTAR, or visit the Microsoft security download site:  www.microsoft.com/technet/security

Union, along with many College campuses were crippled early in the Fall term by the Blaster worm, which spread on un-patched computers.  Some colleges threatened fines for owners of un-patched computers.  Union had to at first take whole dorms off the network, then was able to isolate individual infected computers.  This episode stands as a warning of the need to have absolutely up-to-the-minute security patches on all computers.

Click here for the Union ITS message to the campus community.

2. New scheduling and calendar software and procedures.  The new scheduling system is up and running, and we are currently compiling suggestions for improvements.

Student clubs need two passwords; then end up getting the same room; perhaps a more generic form for a student club.  Is security in the loop?  Can we be sure that the doors are open?  Training - one to one - Might be better to train in small groups, to bring out common questions; leaves some questions unanswered.  There does not seem to be a way to cancel an event. The way to cancel is to send an e-mail.

Please send any comments or suggestions to Doug Klein.

3. GIS success.  Cherrice Traver and Pilar Moyano successfully led Union's first GIS miniterm to Cordoba, Spain in July.  Teams of students mapped historic Cordoba, from Roman times, through the 21st Century.  The "Mapping Cordoba" website should be up shortly.  Meanwhile, click here for Cherrice's powerpoint presentation at the NITLE-funded GIS workshop held in August at Williams College.

4. Web archiving project; presented in June at the annual CLAC conference at Gettysburg College.  Click here for details.  Click here for the CLAC conference website.

5. Multimedia workshop sponsored by ITS in July. About a dozen Union faculty and staff learned how to create and edit multimedia files, and include them in presentations.  Click here for details.

The FCRC and the Graphics Lab are now both multimedia workshops.

ITS will try to give faculty more support in integrating technology into the classroom; Eleven faculty were helped with multimedia projects over the summer. They will present their projects tomorrow (October 9).

The Office of Curricular Design is developing a database of how faculty are using technology.  Faculty are encouraged to submit their work: http://curriculum.union.edu/projects/tech/sort.php

6. ITS reported on recent activities.  These activities are summarized in their Fall newsletter.

7. Online file storage. A question arose about the possibility of server and accounts for students with XP.  This would allow students to log in; give them a private space to save files.  EE/CpE may try this in one of their labs.  EE/CpP will contact Val K.

8. Learning Environments. We are participating in the learning elements archive collection from Wesleyan University.  Click here for more details.
