Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

As a result of the 3-year [extended to four], $335,000 Mellon Grant, money is available "to enable faculty to adapt and implement computer and multimedia technologies in the Freshman Preceptorial … and in other undergraduate courses." Specifically, money is available in the following categories (follow links for application forms):

  1. Freshman preceptorial: "…the development, integration, and assessment of materials and modules utilizing computer-based and multimedia technologies into the Freshman Preceptorial". In the first year, three grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to an individual or team of faculty, each team to address one of the five packets taught in FP. Additional funding is available to hire student technology assistants (for web programming, scanning, video editing, etc.).   Dean Brad Lewis has developed a list of suggested projects to begin discussion.  For the final year of the grant (2001-2002), proposals will be considered for any of the new preceptorial themes.  The objective will be to create modules that other faculty will be able to incorporate into their sections.
  2. Faculty training workshops "to support course development and delivery efforts". Workshops may range from one afternoon to multiple-day. Funding is available to bring in outside experts, including transportation, honoraria, and workshop materials.  If you have suggestions for workshops or speakers, please e-mail your suggestions to Doug Klein or Kesheng Yu.
  3. Faculty attendance at training conferences. Travel and conference registration and materials covered up to $900. Faculty attending training conferences will be expected to present one or more faculty training workshops when they return to Union.
  4. Faculty visits to other colleges, to observe facilities and teaching techniques, or to investigate collaborative courses.
  5. Interdisciplinary Course Development Grants, including Converging Technologies. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to teams of faculty to create or reconfigure inter-disciplinary team-taught courses, especial in Converging Technologies, to use technology to enrich those courses. Proposals to develop interdisciplinary, team-taught courses involving Union faculty and faculty at other institutions will also be considered.
