Faculty and Course Development Funds
from Union's MELLON Grant

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
NOTE: The Mellon Grant ended, December 2002.


Union's Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation contains money to be used for the development of team-taught courses interdisciplinary courses, as well as funding to develop technology-based resources in support of Freshman Preceptorial, and to support faculty development in other ways. Awards previously made are listed at the Union Mellon Grant web site.

We invite faculty to apply in a second round of funding using the following guidelines:

Freshman Preceptorial Awards - Application Form  

  1. Awards will be made to work interdisciplinary FP theme for an entire course, or an interdisciplinary module which could later be used by other instructors.
  2. Grants may be for up to $5000 per project to use for development of support materials and faculty stipends. Proposals may come from individuals or groups.
  3. Proposals should specify how your project furthers the goal of the Mellon grant by using technology to enhance the interdisciplinary nature of the FP course.

Interdisciplinary Team-Taught Course or Course Module Awards - Application Form

  1. Normally, these courses or course modules will be team-taught by two faculty members from different disciplines.  Course modules should be segments or materials which can be made available through technology to be used by other faculty in other courses and disciplines.  Examples include web pages, CD-ROMs, video or audio presentations, still images, exhibitions or performances.  Particular emphasis will be given to the development of student assignments and activities which require students to make use of technology (for research, analysis, communication, or presentation), and to techniques to use technology to incorporate international contact and content across the curriculum.
  2. Awards will be up to $5000 per course is available for full course development and faculty stipends, lesser amounts for course modules and assignments.  The budget can include any combination of materials, travel, equipment, or stipend. (Stipends can not exceed the amount that would be paid for an overload course.) 
  3. If the course is taught by two faculty members both will receive a full course teaching credit for the first two times that the course is offered. If more than two faculty collaborate, the total teaching credit per course offering is two.
  4. Proposals should clearly state how technology will be used to facilitate the interdisciplinary nature of the course or course module.

Deadline: Proposals for Mellon support should be submitted on paper or electronically to the Associate Dean for Information Technology, Prof. Doug Klein, Social Sciences Building.  These proposals should be 2-4 pages in length (double-spaced). Other Mellon Funding Opportunities - Application Form

  1. The Mellon grant will fund speakers or workshop leaders who deal with using technology to support interdisciplinary teaching.
  2. Faculty may apply to travel to other institutions or to conferences which will facilitate the goal of promoting interdisciplinary courses.
  3. Applications for speakers, workshops, and travel are accepted at any time. Direct applications to Prof. Doug Klein (kleind@union.edu).
